Job Title: Research Scientist V

Location: Sunnyvale, California, United States

Overview: We are seeking a Research Scientist to join our Research & Development teams, focused on advancing virtual and augmented reality (AR/VR) and edge devices. This role will leverage expertise in AI infrastructure and machine learning to develop innovative solutions for efficient compute and power management in training and on-device inference of vision and language models. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in AI algorithms, hardware acceleration, and model optimization for real-time and resource-constrained environments.

Responsibilities:

• Apply AI infrastructure, algorithms, and hardware acceleration techniques to improve and optimize intelligent ML systems for AR, VR, and edge device applications.
• Develop state-of-the-art model compression, scalability, and optimization techniques such as pruning, distillation, and numerics.
• Optimize models for hardware to meet performance, latency, and power constraints in real-time applications.
• Set goals related to project impact, AI algorithms, system design, and developer efficiency.
• Conduct data-driven analysis and collaborate with teams to drive impact and deliver results.
• Define use cases and develop methodologies and benchmarks to evaluate various approaches.
• Utilize deep knowledge of ML infrastructure and its interactions with surrounding systems to inform development.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed before joining.
• PhD (or in process) in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field. Degree must be completed before joining.
• Specialized experience in one or more areas: model compression, hardware-aware model optimizations, hardware accelerators architecture, GPU architecture, ML compilers, high-performance computing, or machine learning systems.
• Proficiency in AI system infrastructure, algorithms, or hardware acceleration using C/C++ or Python.
• Authorization to work in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain work authorization during employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with large-scale AI model training and inference.
• Knowledge of distributed systems or on-device algorithm development.
• Proven track record in research, evidenced by grants, patents, and publications in top-tier conferences (e.g., NeurIPS, CVPR, ICML).
• Experience in software engineering and contributions to open-source repositories (e.g., GitHub).
• Strong teamwork and cross-functional communication skills.
• Experience solving complex problems and evaluating alternative solutions to determine optimal paths forward.

Must-Have Skills:

• AI/LLM Model Optimization: Expertise in optimizing AI/LLM models for enhanced performance, efficiency, and scalability.
• Research and Publication: A proven history of conducting original research and publishing papers in high-impact conferences and journals.
• AI Coding in PyTorch or Similar Frameworks: Proficiency in coding with popular frameworks like PyTorch, TensorFlow, or Keras for efficient and scalable model development.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

• Model Training and Fine-Tuning: Experience in training and fine-tuning AI/LLM models for specific tasks or domains.
• Enablement and Implementation: Expertise in deploying AI/LLM models on cloud and edge platforms.
• Cloud and Edge Device Optimization: Knowledge of optimizing models for deployment in cloud and edge environments, ensuring efficient use of resources.

Education:

• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or equivalent practical experience required.
