Job Summary:

The Office of Strategic Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is seeking a dynamic visual storyteller for the role of Photographer. This position creates visual assets for various platforms, including social media, university websites, and internal and external storytelling channels. Working with a robust creative team, the Photographer produces content that showcases the vibrant campus community and brings the UW brand to life.


The ideal candidate is creative and versatile, with a strong photography background in brand-focused storytelling and editorial styles. They are familiar working with digital asset management platforms, informative captioning, and archiving best practices.

Responsibilities:

Plans, composes, captures, and edits photographs on behalf of the institution and its members, and makes visual content available for institutional projects, programs, and units.
  • 25% Schedules logistics and secures resources for photographic sessions to meet objectives according to established requirements and desired effects
  • 45% Composes, processes, and edits photographs in various mediums utilizing specialized equipment and expertise
  • 5% Adheres to institutional brand standards, guidelines, and policies regarding acceptable editing practices and uses of photographic visual assets
  • 5% Serves as in-house expert on the effective use of photographic visual assets for advancing the goals of the institution, unit, and/or program
  • 15% Archives, organizes and tags digital photographic assets
  • 5% Applies creative and technical skills along with editorial independence, editorial judgment and journalistic integrity on projects across digital platforms

Qualifications:

REQUIRED:

  • Minimum 3 years related experience (relevant student/internship experience may be considered)
  • In-depth knowledge of digital cameras, lenses, and lighting equipment
  • Proficiency in Photo Mechanic software
  • Proficiency in Adobe software suite
  • Demonstrated ability to caption, keyword, and archive multimedia content
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaborate within a team
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and present ideas while giving and receiving constructive feedback
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects at once while delivering on deadlines
PREFERRED:

  • Experience working as part of a larger creative team
  • Drone experience with a certified remote pilot license
  • Video experience is a plus

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%


This is a hybrid position. Some on-site work may be required with flexibility to perform some work remotely.


Occasional night and weekend work required.
May work outdoors in all weather conditions.
