University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security is seeking a Police Lieutenant to manage the Special Events and Protective Security unit. Reporting to the USS Associate Director, this lieutenant is responsible for providing functional direction and supervision to the sergeant and officers assigned to the unit.  

Special Events management consists of reviewing all campus applications for events, determining the appropriate level of police and security, and developing operational plans required for a safe and secure event.  

Protective Security is a unit with functions encompassing intelligence coordination, executive protection, and asset protection.  It is essential that all aspects of protective security be coordinated for efficient deployment of resources and information sharing.

This position requires flexibility in working various days and hours. Applicants must be willing to adjust their scheduled workdays and hours based on the needs of the community and the responsibilities of the unit.

The ideal candidate would have prior experience with the planning of large events, executive protection, and physical security.

This position is designated as a long-term special assignment, as outlined in the Special Assignments and Positions Memorandum of Understanding within the Command Officers Association of Michigan Collective Bargaining Agreement. This position requires professional business attire. Depending on the job assignment and duties, plain clothes or uniforms may also be required.

  • A minimum of 5 years of law enforcement supervisory experience
  • A bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Safety or a related field or equivalent combination of training, education and experience
  • Must be MCOLES Certified, Or, must pass the Licensing Standards for MCOLES within the first 3 months of employment
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, multitask, and prioritize assignments and deadlines
  • Ability to present ideas and recommendations to peers and management
  • Demonstrated leadership and creative problem solving skills with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced security environment, where confidentiality is critical
  • Ability to develop and motivate others
  • Considerable knowledge of state and federal law
  • Ability to maintain sensitive information in strictest confidence
  • Proven ability to initiate and maintain productive and collaborative relationships with internal and external constituencies and diverse audiences
  • Ability to work various days and hours on short notice

All members of the Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.

As such, you are required to report Clery reportable offenses that come to your attention. DPSS employees are required to complete Clery Compliance Training within the first 14 days of employment and annually thereafter.
